Springfield man pleads not guilty to murder charge

Springfield, Mo - A Springfield man charged with second degree murder has plead not guilty

Tommy Morris Jr. is accused of running a red light and causing a crash that killed a 31-year-old woman from Nixa. 

On April 17, Springfield police officers observed a vehicle speed through the parking lot of Price Cutter at Chestnut and West Bypass at 2:40 p.m., striking a shopping cart and a male pushing the cart. The male was uninjured.

Authorities began to pursue Morris, but lost sight of his vehicle at Scenic and Catalpa.

Officers in the area were attempting to relocate Morris when they came upon a crash that occurred at Scenic and Mt. Vernon between Morris’s vehicle and four additional vehicles.

Dana Sowards, 31, of Nixa was killed when Morris’ vehicle crashed into her.

Police also found meth in his vehicle after the collision.

Morris has been charged with second-degree murder, attempt to deliver a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
