Marine stationed at FLW dies in drowning

UPDATE: The Marine involved in the Big Piney River incident on Fort Leonard Wood has been identified as Pfc. Corey Staten.

Staten was a Basic Motor Transport Marine assigned to the Marine Corps Detachment at Fort Leonard Wood.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. - The body of a missing Marine from Fort Leonard Wood was found Thursday morning in the Big Piney River.

Fort Leonard Wood officials and the Missouri State Highway Patrol recovered the body around 9:20 a.m. The Marine went missing yesterday evening after being swept away by the river's current.

Search and rescue teams attempted to locate the missing Marine, but search operations were suspended after 9:00 p.m., Wednesday night. Search operations were resumed Thursday morning around 7:30.

The identification of the Marine is being withheld until next-of-kin notification is made.

The incident is under investigation by the Fort Leonard Wood DES and the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command.
