(Springfield, Mo.--04/12/18) Habitat for Humanity is highlighting the need for affordable housing for homeowners across the area with their second annual Home is the Key campaign.
For many people across the Ozarks, access to affordable housing remains out of reach. That's why Habitat for Humanity is unlocking the future for homeowners.
"You’re sitting there and you’re watching your sidings moldings and it’s literally disintegrating and you don’t know what to do about it," explains homeowner Cindy Haywood.
Poverty levels in the city of Springfield fall far below the national average, making it hard for many homeowners like Haywood to make home repairs.
"My house would be falling apart. The siding was literally rotting because it wasn’t an expensive siding that was on to begin with."
Haywood is benefiting from a program launched by the non profit that helps people renovate the homes they are already living in.
"Being able to come to Habitat and use that kind of resource for something that you’ll never get it done, you’ll never get it done if you don’t get help."
That's why the non profit is selling keys during the month of April to promote the Home is the Key campaign by highlighting the critical need for affordable housing.
Abby Glenn, Development Associate, Habitat for Humanity Springfield, tells FOX5," We’re hoping is that not only will we be raising funds to be able to build and repair more homes but we’re also hoping to drive awareness and attentions so that people know that we’re here as an arm to serve."
Eliminating blight and strengthening neighborhoods-- one home and one family at a time.
"Showing people how important housing is and making sure that people know that we as a community that we need to ensure that affordable housing is attainable for our community."
