SPRINGFIELD, MO (04/06/18) - The man suspected of carrying out two homicides in Springfield has been found and arrested. Around 1:30 a.m. police arrested 24-year-old Willie Haughton after about an 18 hour search, standoff, and negotiations.
“Any time there is a homicide it’s heartening and frustrating that we weren’t able to protect someone," says police chief Paul Williams.
Police surrounded a home Thursday on North Bolivar road after receiving credible information that Haughton had stayed the previous night there. As the standoff was going on, about 15 minutes away on West Farm Road 148, police had another house under surveillance. Authorities made there way there around midnight after the standoff on N Bolivar.
"The sheriff’s department got there and started doing the call out just like we did," says Williams. "It was, pretty, quickly that someone came out and said, ‘Yea he’s in there.’ And then, shortly, after that he came out.”
Haughton has been charged with nine felonies including: two counts of first degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action, one count of first degree robbery, two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, and failure to appear in court.
Williams says they stayed at the house on N Bolivar for so long because the people inside the house were not being helpful and truthful. "Someone that stuck with their story pretty heavily that he was there and a couple other people sticking to their story that he wasn’t. So it makes it very difficult for us to figure out what to do next and where to go," explains Williams. "But, absolutely, we’re not going to leave that first location on bolivar road until we were absolutely sure he wasn’t there.”
Williams says that the murders were targeted and it was evident early on that they were linked to Haughton in a detailed way. The probable cause statement shows that Haughton, allegedly, shot and killed Lance Loveless on March 27th. Loveless’s wife told officers that he was meeting her husband for drugs and was wearing a bulletproof vest.
A few days later he, allegedly, shot and killed Robert Hewitt. Both men were found dead in their vehicles.
Springfield police say that no one else has been arrested at this time. This is an on-going investigation and Fox 5 will keep you updated as more info comes in. You can view the probable cause statement below.
