Neighbors react to son accused of killing mother

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- (3/1/2018) The Greene County Sheriff's Office has now released the probable cause statement which has revealed more details of what led Connor Cox to murder his own mother.

Fifty-three-year-old Angela Cox was found dead inside her home Tuesday evening by her husband who told officials his 21-year-old son could be the one responsible for her death.

"I was shocked, very shocked when I found out what was going on," said Margo Hopkins, the Cox's next door neighbor.

The suspect was apprehended by officials early the next morning after deputies located his mother's stolen car. According to the released statement, Connor told officers he used a gun his family kept in the attic to shoot his mother in the neck while she worked in her home office. He said it was an effort to end the pain he believed he caused her.

Those who knew Connor are still in shock and said this is unlike the boy they once knew.

"He was a really good kid. He dropped band because he wanted to pursue the culinary arts, so he did that, but we kept in contact the next couple years, but to find out he's the one that did it, it was just awful," said Troy Cronkhite, the Cox's neighbor and Connor's former band teacher.

However, as neighbors continue to cope with the tragic loss, they state that Mrs. Cox won't be forgotten.

"She was out working in the yard and I was out working in the yard, she was always really friendly, always had a ready smile," said Hopkins.

"I was sick about a year and a half ago and she came over and took care of our yard for us. I just hope and pray for the family that they heal during this process," said Cronkhite.

Connor Cox is currently being held on no bond at the Greene County jail where he is charged with armed criminal action and first degree murder.
