Free opioid overdose response training offered to community

Posted: Updated:

Hollister, Mo. -- (2/28/2018) The Stone and Taney Counties Substance Abuse Initiative is hosting Substance Misuse: Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Administration Training sessions for area business owners, leaders and community members.

The free two-hour training session is available at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, March 16, in the conference room at Arrowhead Building Supply Inc. at 181 Hollister Pointe Dr., in Hollister.

“Substance use disorders are complex diseases of the brain,” said Marietta Hagan, Substance Abuse Initiative project coordinator. “During these sessions, we will talk about the history of the opioid epidemic, how we arrived where we are today and the changing legal landscape around substance use. Participants will learn how opioid use disorders affect the brain, how to recognize an opioid overdose and how to respond.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported that in 2016, 11.5 million people misused prescription opioids and 116 people died each day from opioid-related drug overdoses.

“An opioid overdose can happen to anyone taking opioids, not just a person using heroin or buying pills on the street,” Hagan says. “The elderly are at risk, along with anyone taking prescription opioid medication prescribed by a physician. This training will help prepare members of our community to be ready to respond appropriately.”

The free training is provided by the Substance Abuse Initiative in partnership with CoxHealth, Skaggs Foundation, Hollister Area Chamber of Commerce, Community Partnership of the Ozarks and the MO-HOPE Project. The Stone and Taney Counties Substance Abuse Initiative is a grant-funded project aimed at reducing and preventing substance use and misuse led by CoxHealth and funded by a Skaggs Legacy Endowment grant.
