Billions spent on flowers for Valentine's Day

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, MO (02/12/18) - The day of love is just a couple days away. And with the average American spending around $200 on their significant other the most popular gift continues to be flowers.

As you head out to buy gifts for your sweetie on Valentines Day it’s been estimated by the National Retail Federation that $2 billion will be spent on flowers. For Donovan Wheeler, manager at House of Flowers, he says Valentine's Day is the single busiest day for their flower shop.

“It’s always on the 14th of February but that doesn’t really sink in with a lot of guys," says Wheeler. "And then the last few days we practically live out here.”

With calls and orders coming in, Wheeler says they’re receiving calls from around the world placing orders for loved ones that live here in Springfield. “The delivery crew has a wonderful time presenting flowers to people and the reactions they get are wonderful.”

And don’t forget about chocolate and candy. The NRF says $1.7 billion will be spent on sweet treats. But nothing can beat a classic love letter. Hopeless romantics will exchange 190 million cards with a whopping $1 billion estimated to be spent.

For those of you that are last minute shoppers, Wheeler recommends placing your orders sooner than later as delivery times tend to fill up.

If you have trouble calling into House of Flowers, Wheeler says you can place your order online www.houseofflowers1.com.
