Oklahoma woman in critical condition after highway crash

Joplin, Mo. -- (2/8/2018) The Joplin Police Department responded to a report of a serious crash Thursday morning on Highway 43. According to a report, Jennifer D. Dumas, 28, of Joplin, was heading southbound on the highway when she crossed the center line and hit Maria E. Leonard, 48, of Afton, Oklahoma, head on.

According to reports, Leonard is in critical condition at a Joplin Hospital with life threatening injuries. Maria Leonard is in a serious but stable condition at a Springfield Hospital. Joplin Police learned while responding to the crash that there had been a disturbance at a Rapid Roberts Truck Stop in the same area before the crash. The disturbance involved Dumas and her vehicle along with another vehicle. Dumas and the other vehicle were reportedly both driving carelessly on the parking lot of the Rapid Robert’s and the outer road, before proceeding southbound on Highway 43. The other vehicle and its driver have been located and identified.

Several witnesses notified police of the events that occurred before the crash. JPD is asking anyone who saw the disturbance, the careless driving, the crash or any other events during this incident to call 417-623- 3131, attention Detective Cpl. Ben Cooper, extension 440.

The investigation is ongoing.
