Springfield, Mo. -- (01/26/18) Dickerson Park Zoo has announced the birth of a black and white colobus monkey.
The baby was born on Thursday and both the mother and baby are doing well. Colobus monkeys are born with their eyes open and weigh approximately one pound.
“The colobus exhibit is open to the public; however, there is a good chance mom will choose to stay in the indoor area out of site,” said zoo spokeswoman Joey Powell. “She’s holding her baby pretty close and shielding it from view. We do not yet know the sex of the baby.”
According to a report from the zoo, black and white colobus monkeys are native to central and east Africa. Babies are born with white fur and acquire the distinguishing adult coloring between 4-12 months.
