SPRINGFIELD, MO (01/25/18) - Sometimes, in life, you’re just not able to finish your education when you want to. OTC says that’s okay by offering free adult education and literacy classes. OTC is ready to prepare students for the next level of their education and future career goals.
“There are always situations where people had to leave high school," says adult education instructor Linda Whipple. "Some by their own choice, I know, but sometimes it’s just a situation where they had to. So they need this opportunity to get a second shot.”
With about 50 students taking the free course one student says she’s ready for a change.
“I’m in the program because I’m almost 30. I want to do better in life and I have children to take care of and working fast food isn’t my dream for the rest of my life,"says student Tiffany Hasty.
To be in the program you must be atleast 17-years-old and not enrolled in high school. Whipple says the class has seen a variety of ages ranging up from folks in their early 60’s.
To get their HiSET, the equivalent to a GED, students must complete practice tests to prepare them for the exam. And Hasty is has her date set.
“I take it the 30th of this month. I’m not nervous," she says. "I got this, yea!”
The program, also, offer ESL classes to allow students to study English as their second language. With graduation for some almost 2 months away students are ready to further their education.
“They get very excited and so do we! They’re our babies we worked up to that level and they’re ready to graduate and go," Whipple.
