SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- (01/10/2017) Crimes against women are continuing to grow, so knowing the art of self defense is becoming increasingly important.
"Just in the act of fighting back, showing the attacker that you're not willing to be a victim, most of the time will cause them to stop," said Chris Dunham, the owner of Dunham's Martial Arts Training Center.
While learning self defense can be intimidating for some, it's all about knowing your ABCs: awareness, boundaries and combat skills. You also don't have to be an expert to defend yourself, as knowing a few simple moves can often be the difference between life and death.
Although it's becoming increasingly important for women to learn the art of self-defense, it's something that can be beneficial to anyone of any age, and the art expands far beyond just learning moves.
"The most effective, simple thing is to just show confidence in a stance. If someone's standing here frightened, versus hands up, step back, it doesn't have to be any special pose, but hands up, stepping back, being able to show that I'm ready to protect myself," said Dunham.
