SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- (12/05/2017) An investigation is now underway after a dog was found in a ditch, bloody, abandoned and in desperate need of medical attention.
After being brought in by Rescue One and transported to an emergency vet clinic for immediate attention, the dog, fondly named Zander by his rescuers, was barely clinging to life.
With old scarring and numerous recent wounds, Zander is estimated to be less than a year old. Due to his missing front teeth, rescuers believe his wounds are most likely due to being used as a bait dog.
Commonly used to train fighting dogs, bait animals mouths are often muzzled to prevent them from fighting back, resulting in them being mauled or even killed by their attackers.
Luckily for Zander, his rescuers found him just in time. He's now recovering at the Spring Valley Vet Hospital where he's under heavy antibiotics and pain medication. The pup is also receiving laser therapy hoping to treat his countless injuries.
Even though Zander was lucky enough to be rescued, his story brings light to the dog fighting rings that are a very real problem in the Ozarks. The Humane Society of the United States is offering a $5,000 reward for anyone who brings forward information leading to an arrest for dog fighting. If you have any tips to report, call 877-TIP-HSUS.
