Springfield, MO -- (11/22/17) It’s all paws on deck for our latest Pay It Forward winner who helps community cats in need and finds them a permanent home.
Watching Over Whiskers, an organization launched in 2015, fosters and takes care of cats and kittens and carefully places them in forever homes.
WOW Founder Marcie Bowling says, “As time went on, I became more frustrated that there weren’t as many options for helping felines in need. So, I decided someone should do something. And I kept saying, ‘Someone should do this. Someone should do that.’ And then finally one of my friends said, ‘Well why don’t you just do that.’”
With a gestation period of 60 days, and the possibility of having three litters a year, one female cat can produce up to 1000 offspring in her lifetime. And all those cats can add up quickly, which is where Watching Over Whiskers steps in.
“We use a portion of our funding for TNR – which is trap, neuter, and return – for the feral cats in the community. Because that’s really how you stop the overpopulation that we have now in our community.” Marcie says.
With those methods, Watching Over Whiskers has already saved over 1,400 cats. But, beyond TNR, there’s another hurdle to jump: at any given moment, there’s 75 to 125 foster cats and kittens waiting to be fostered.
“The more people know about us, the more people contact us. Well, most of the time, they’re wanting us to take their cats; they’re not looking for a cat. So foster homes are a great need that we have.” Marcie adds.
Volunteer foster Stacy Schneider says, “I think the need in Springfield has been fulfilled because of Marcie. There’s always still a need, but if it wasn’t for her, I think there would be a lot of animals in the world really struggling to survive right now.”
Marcie says donations such as food and litter are always in high demand. You can find more information on what specifically to donate and how to donate on their website, watchingoverwhiskers.org.
With the help of Air Services and All Service Plumbing, Marcie received a $250 VISA Card.
Thank you, Marcie, for all that you do for the community, cats, and beyond!
