Springfield, MO -- (11/15/17) This month’s Golden Apple winner teaches at Springfield Lutheran but Mrs. Karen Schaller – who’s taught for the past 13 years -- wasn’t always a teacher. She says she worked at an ophthalmology office as an ophthalmic technician but she wanted a change.
And that change led Karen to substitute teach for a year, which helped her discover her love for teaching. Next, she took on classes, juggling those, a job, and her family. And three years later, she got her teaching certificate. Following that, she began her new career at Springfield Lutheran.
“God had an opening for me, and I got the position as sixth grade teacher here.” she says.
Mrs. Schaller teaches Language Arts for 6th through 8th grade.
With the help of Tropical Smoothie Café, we presented her with a $250 Visa card and a $25 gift card to Tropical Smoothie Café.
Karen’s favorite thing about teaching is as simple as watching her students learn.
“I love seeing the looks on kids’ faces when they finally understand something. The light bulb goes on and they go, ‘Oh, I get it now!’” she says.
And some of her students told us what makes her such a great teacher.
James Noggle, a student, says, “I like her because she helps you with everything you do. And she gives you a chance to correct the work if you don’t get it exactly right.”
Karen is also the school’s archery coach.
Congratulations Mrs. Schaller, and thank you for all you do!
