SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- (11/14/2017) Tonight parents and students in Pierce City are mourning the tragic death of 10-year-old Kaydee Moerer who was found dead in her home just yesterday morning.
The Lawrence County Sheriff's office responded to a well-being check at a rural Pierce City home on Monday morning only to find both Kaydee and her mother, 40-year-old Sara Spears, dead inside the home each with a single gun-shot wound.
Kaydee, a third grade student at St. Mary's Catholic School, was said to be happy and loving. Today, parents and students gathered to remember Kaydee by attending a rosary service held in her honor.
School officials also released a statement today stating that they plan to have several mental health professionals available for those struggling to cope with the loss. They also added that they plan to keep things as normal as possible for the students, parents and faculty in order to provide an atmosphere of support.
After receiving autopsy results today, Lawrence County Investigators have confirmed that the pair died as a result of the gunshot wounds, and they are ruling the incident a murder-suicide. The investigation will continue, however, to determine how much time had passed since someone last had contact with Kaydee or her mother.
