(Nixa, Mo.--10/25/17) Our cool dreary weather has many people scrambling to find their winter coats, but some local kids don’t have a coat to keep them warm.
Least of These food pantry in Christian County is hoping to change that.
"I can’t imagine the kids not having a coat through the winter or myself. Winters get brutal around here," explains parent, Kelly Kwiejda.
Kwiejda has three kids of her own in her household. She says this year has been challenging after she injured her foot limiting her to provide a coat for her family.
"It can be dangerous if they don’t have everything they need in the winter time especially a coat to protect them against the elements."
That's why Least of These is trying to ensure coats can be attainable for everyone, even those who may not be able to afford it.
"With the electric bills going up,gas prices, everything seems to compound in the winter but the extra little help from Least of These is really appreciated."
Organizers say the coats for kids drive is an effort to help those less fortunate stay safe and warm during the winter months.
Kristy Carter is the Director of Development at Least of These. She tells FOX5, "If we didn’t do it I don’t know who would. And I know that these parents are already stretched way beyond what they can probably handle today anyway.
Least of these food pantry’s coats for kids drive is quickly coming to a close.
"We will hand them out because people need them."
Carter says with time running out, they still need a lot of help from the community.
"There’s that many people in Christian County alone who need coats. So the more coats that we collect the more coats we can hand out."
Kids like 11-year old- Katlynn Matthews are grateful for the opportunity in the christian county community to receive a free coat.
"I feel very thankful that they’ve given me a coat to be healthy because I’m warm and to be safe," explains Matthews.
Carter says they have free coats giveaways for people of all ages and stages of life. She says they will be accepting new to gently used coats until October 30th.
