SPRINGFIELD, Mo-(7/14/17) The suspect wanted for a Thursday shooting in Springfield is in the hospital after shooting himself during a standoff Friday afternoon. Springfield Police surrounded a home on the 4300 Block of West Madison in West Springfield, after the suspect wanted in Thursday's shooting was followed to that residence.
Neighbors nearby were told to shelter in their homes as law enforcement tried to make contact with the suspect for hours. Rachel Newkirk had her weekend plans interrupted as police blocked off the street in each direction. "Literally every three to five minutes cars kept coming either on this side or coming around, they all had guns and shields so I kind of got worried,” said Newkirk, who lives across the street.
With the afternoon heat index souring into the mid 90's, officers worked in shifts to stay hydrated. “Obviously the uniforms we wear are pretty warm, and in direct sunlight for a long time, it gets to wear on the officers so we have been giving breaks and providing water to them and so forth,” explained Lt. Tad Peters with the Springfield Police Department.
After five hours in the heat, a search warrant was obtained for the residence. Officers entered through the front door, finding the suspect inside with a life threatening self-inflicted gun shot wound. He has been transported to the hospital and is currently in serious condition. Two others inside the home were also taken into custody.
