Rolla shooting investigation continues

Posted: Updated:

ROLLA, Mo. -- (06/15/2017) On May 31, 2017, around 8:32 p.m., the Rolla Police Department received a 911 call reporting a shooting that took place on Forum Drive in Rolla. When officers arrived at the scene, Anthony J. Debar, 25, was found shot in both the hand and leg.

After an initial investigation, officials believed there were significant discrepancies in what Debar was reporting. On June 7, enough discrepancies were discovered to provide probable cause to arrest Debar for filing a false police report.

Although Debar was arrested, investigators continued following leads and and new information that was reported regarding the incident.

On June 12, investigators received additional information that corroborated Debar’s initial report. As a result of the newly discovered evidence, the Rolla Police Department  gathered enough evidence to conclude that Debar did not shoot himself, and the charges should be dropped.

The Phelps County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office dismissed the charge of filing a false police report per the request of investigators.

Chief Sean Fagan of the Rolla Police Department said, “This is a very unusual turn of events. It is very uncommon for us to unarrest someone, however when the evidence began pointing in another direction, there was no doubt that we needed to do the right thing and request that the charges against Mr. Debar be dismissed. We will continue to aggressively work this investigation and will continue to follow up on any leads which may be developed in attempt to apprehend the violent suspect in this case and bring him to justice.”

The identity of the suspect is currently unknown. According to the police department, this investigation is still very active, and officers will continue to pursue any and all leads.
