SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-(5/18/17) Springfield Police are investigating a drive by shooting that happened Thursday morning near the intersection of University and Fremont. An unknown suspect driving a black sedan had followed a man driving a white sedan for some time before opening fire near Mercy Hospital. The white sedan was hit numerous times with the man inside sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. He fled the scene, driving himself to Mercy Hospital for treatment. After receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries, the victim was interviewed by police. Despite not giving up the identity of the shooter, SPD thinks it's likely the two know each other. “It’s such a rarity in Springfield for that kind of violent act to happen between strangers. We just know that’s not something we typically see, it’s our belief that they have some type of relationship,” said Lisa Cox, a spokesperson for the department.
Police continue to search for the gunman who fled the scene after the shooting. The department urges anyone with any information to call their tip hotline at 869-TIPS. “If anyone else in the area happened to see the car maybe drive fast through their neighborhood between ten and eleven o clock that would be helpful, anyone who happened to catch a license plate, that would be super helpful,” said Cox.
