SPRINGFIELD, MO (04/19/17) - Summer is right around the corner and thousands of kids will participate in a summer school program, Explore!
“It gives kids a place to come, a safe place to come, during the summer. It allows them to eat when maybe they’d be making breakfast and lunch on their own," says nutrition services development director Amy Gibbons.
And it’s free! Around 10,000 students will get free breakfast and lunch during the summer. And you don’t even have to be enrolled to eat!
Gibbons says, "If you’re in the community and you want your child to eat breakfast and lunch bring them on to summer school!”
With 40 days of Explore about 340,000 meals will be served! The catch however, you have to be 18-years-old and younger to participate.
And Springfield schools are preparing for the crowds of children to come enjoy their meals by seeking teachers and self promotion.
“Of course trying to find enough employees that want to work during the summer. So, we go to job fairs and promote our summer school program with our kids and parents," says Gibbons. "We’ve already started that on this year’s menu already for summer school.”
And if you’re looking for the best summer school to put your child in, out of the 25 in Springfield, 16 are participating.
Last year, 10 percent of families that weren’t enrolled in Explore took advantage of the free meals.
